The "New Wine Year and Grape Stomping Palio" is a highly anticipated event held in San Giovanni in Marignano, a village in Romagna known for its wine-making tradition. The event, scheduled annually towards the end of September (this year on September 22nd), marks the conclusion of the grape harvest and welcomes the new wine. During the day, the village comes alive with historical characters and traditional crafts, offering visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in the rural atmosphere of the early 20th century.
In addition to the chance to taste local wines, such as Sangiovese and Pagadebit, and typical products of Romagna, the highlight of the event is the Grape Stomping Palio. In this competition, the village's districts (La Cattolica, Monte di Conca, Pian di Ventena, and Pietrafitta) compete by stomping grapes barefoot inside a barrel, with the aim of producing the largest quantity of must. The event is enriched by antique and vintage markets, as well as shows and games for all ages, which evoke rural life and peasant culture. It's a perfect opportunity to discover Romagna's culture and savor the typical products of the region in a festive and authentic atmosphere.
